I guess my question has to be why the republicans pushed a man who was nothing but a failure at us. After reading about george's history I am not surprised that we are in the mess we are in. He doesn't realize that the price of gas may hit $4 per gallon in April. We can't save the world and give the richest 1% a tax cut. Cheney's tax cut is probably more then the income of my whole department at work. I feel like 7 years ago I entered the twilight zone and no one is doing anything to end it.

Steve's post hit hard today. I lost a 22 year old son to heroin 10 years ago. I attended a wake this week for the son of a close friend, again heroin OD was the cause of death. My friend's son struggled for 15 years; my son lasted only 2 yrs. Using heroin just one time will eventually kill you.
It infuriates me that our military invasion of the Middle East has not accomplished the irradication of opium production.

Answer. When one hears a republican say, "All democrats do is tax and spend." The answer is: All republicans do is borrow and spend and leave the bill for our children to pay.
Question. Recently the annual most admired man and woman were picked; overwhelmingly, the most admired man in America was George W. Bush. Who in hell were the pollsters asking? Answer. When you hear a republican say, "We have to fight them there so we don't have to fight them here." Answer: Who's going to pay their bus fare to get here. The people that are fighting are poorer than dirt, don't have two nickels to rub toether, and wouldn't know how to get here in any case. Besides that, what is that saying for Homeland Security (HS)? If HS can't stop them, why are we spending all that money on it. Question: Why don't we have a campaign season that starts six weeks before the general election? And any mention of running for an office before that deadline should be dealt with jail time. Answer: Eliminate off-year elections. Make all elections fall at the same time. Otherwise we are in a constant state of electioneering. Answer: Have one standard method of counting ballots in all 50 states.

Good article Steve, but I really don't think that either of the front runners of the democratic party can possibly win a national election. My question is why two republican states can decide who will be the leader of the democratic party? Isn't it about time to have a national primary so that everyone has some say about the process. Personally I don't think that 1-2 terms in the senate is enough experience to be president. With either Obama or Clinton our nation will only become more divided. Heaven help us if the race is close and the republicans try to steal this one.

Steve, my vote here in Michigan didn't count. Our union endorsed John Edwards and I was not able to vote for him. I am beginning to think the whole primary system is a joke. When you consider that after just 2 states all the experienced candidates had already dropped out, most of us have little say in who will be our next candidate. Myself I think we should do what they do in other countries and have national elections for primarys at least every one would have a say and we wouldn't see so many republicans voting for democrates and vise versa. This has been going on way too long and too much money has been spent. I would like it better if we didn't know who was going to be president until the summer. Just think of the campaign season was cut down how much money would be saved. I'm just hoping that a third party comes up with a good candidate, because I am tired of voting for the lesser of two evils.

I just read “Oh Shit” and “No Shit” (I’m afraid I’ve been busy this week). As a long-term ‘60s liberal and a die-hard Keynesian, Bush & Congress need to, and never well, do a jobs bill. Simple: hire people to repair infrastructure (not that it needs it or anything), pay them decently (say $20 an hour) and use MEDICARE TO GIVE THEM MEDICAL BENEFITS. You’d have to beat the applicants off with a stick.
Those hired would SPEND—spend BIG and spend LONG. Might that create some tax revenue? I believe so. I saw some interviews yesterday (on the TV machine—thanks Rachel) where people were asked what they’d do with a government check, and most said they would retire debt. Not “spend.” (And haven’t we been here before?) Big deal. One time help—in today’s world gone almost as soon as it’s received, with little to show for the effort. It won’t—indeed it can’t—work. This is the purest form of hypocrisy: one-time benefits, then nothing. Milton Friedman must be smiling in Hell. “Give the rabble a crumb so they don’t revolt—they’ll be happy.” And watch: any “send money to taxpayers” bill will be LOADED with business perqs. I’m surprised that W decoupled permanent suspension of the estate tax with his taxpayer-money-giveaway. But in the end he won’t--there'll be PLENTY in there for business. As a teacher I must deal every day with the kids who’ll have to PAY for Mr. Bush’s largesse. He thinks he’ll get it (a permanent end to the estate tax) later. My fear is that the lily-livered Congressional Dems will GIVE it to him, in return for NOTHING. That’s enough rant for now.

The next president is going to be left an insolvent, totally depressing mess of a country. Even FDR himself would sit down and cry. Why would you want the Democrats to be blamed for this? Does anyone truly believe that the next Democratic president is just going to wave the "blue wand" at the economic disaster we have become and make it all solvent again? Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi both have the power to begin to change the mess we are in TODAY. They have no idea how to solve the economic problems, except throw us all a bribe from Bush of $800 to shut up and get on down to Walmart. I would like to see McCain preside over the Great Unwinding. There would be no way for him to blame the Democrats. Finally, finally, the Republicans will be forced to face some accountability. What could the next Republican administration do to us? Bankrupt us? Start a war? Raid the Treasury and put the money in their pockets, torture people?? Whoever wins this election will preside over a broken, run down ghetto of a country, with a population that has an "entitlement " attitude and is in debt up to their eyeballs. A country that has legitimately earned the hatred and disgust of the rest of the world. I used to be a Democrat. I will vote for the Republican candidate just so I can see them go down with the boat.

The media have been pushing both Clinton and Obama at us. We are down to 3 candidates and none of them have much experience. Maybe Clinton because she was married to a President but that's not doing the work. I didn't learn how to do my husband's job when I was married to him. This is a real nightmare. We can only hope that a third party comes up with someone who has the ability to be our president and get us out of the mess that w. made.

It's really sad that while people are loosing their homes, that their tax dollars are being spent on a holiday for george w in the middle east. Just how many more weapons do we need to supply to people so that they can blow up our kids. Myself I am ashamed that he is representing our country. At least Bill Clinton didn't make funny faces. I do think that Christ said that many would come in his name but you will know them by their works.

She can win and that is scary. But what is more scary is that Huckabee can win and he'll give us another four or eight yeas of Jesus.
He will not negate the faith based shit and the other Constitution busting laws that Bush has pushed through. We don't need it, we can't use it, we cannot live with it. Sure it'll make the holy rollers happy for awhile but as soon as they realize that tearing down the wall that separates church and state is not the picnic that they thought it would be, then all all hell will break loose.

It seems like we are about to get a little pat on the head. With people going hungry and loosing their homes they have to look for a way to keep us from revolting. $300 doesn't even come close to replacing the money that bush and cheney's friends from the oil companies have stole from me with their high gas prices.

My good friend of many years, Judy, is a wonderful person. She is part of a prominent large Irish Catholic family in my area (Western Massachusetts). Judy works at one of the family's successful large businesses. She served on the boards of many charitable organizations. She, like many of the other family memebers - including her husband, takes her religion seriously and attends a Catholic mass almost daily. The local bishop is a regular at family gatherings. In the past her politics were clearly aligned with the Democrats - her mother was a successful Democratic candidate for county commissioner.
I was stunned when she told me that she would not vote for Hillary Clinton because Hillary did not divorce her husband. I wonder how many other Christians are thinking the same way as Judy? To me it is very flawed thinking. |

TO: Steve and fellow culture critics Accomplices, definitely. I once thought I'd be able to put together enough information to write a book called, "Scratch- n-Win Nation", but I've decided I lack the determination to put it together with all the required research. After all, you already covered the Savings and Loans Scandal. Why don't you just revisit that issue again, and call it Scratch-n-Win Nation? You have the experience to put it together in a snap. Everybody wants something for nothing, the shareholders, the lenders, the borrowers, the private equity traders, etc. It's Inside Job Redeux, only this time EVERYBODY is guilty!

Good article Steve, I do think we have already hit the stagnation phase of the economy. I think it was pushed forward with the cost of gas and heating. The banks don't even let you get a day behind and they are calling harrassing you for the money. People would not be having a hard time paying their bills if it didn't cost so much to heat your home and drive your car to work. The sad part is that America had to be progressive and do away with mass transportation. Myself I don't understand how people can even afford to drive SUVs any longer.

I was wondering if any one else noticed the stange elections in Iowa and NH. I never realized that these were basically republican states and they are deciding who is going to be the democratic candict? What I find strange is the poll numbers and who is winning. Obama was not leading the polls and won in Iowa and Hillary was behind the polls in NH and won. The media was having a really good time the week between elections. What I noticed the most is how the media pundits acted after Hillary won. It was November 2004 all over. Even Bill didn't look to happy.

Sometimes I wonder if there is something the government is not telling us. Why are the democrates allowing a man who stole the election the power to steal our freedoms. That the CEO of Caryle brought the Magna Carter is really scary. That george sr was a part of the Caryle groupe is also very scary. Some times it feels like george w hates us and is punishing us for something. That he has been spying on us sense he stole the election is very scary. That they stole elections and then tell other countries how to run their's is very upsetting. I just wonder sometimes just how much evil has been committed by the bush family in the last 100 years and why they have been allowed to get away with it.

Here's my 2008/early 2009 worry: the Bush administration, as it prepares to leave office, is going to issue, literally, hundreds (if not thousands) of executive orders that will impact the next administration and, more importantly, US, mightily. And isn't there some sort of court decision out there that says incoming presidents cannot automatically undo them "just because they want to?

I would like to suggest , at the risk of being outrageous that Gripes are in fact not the answer- i get the general point - we're all 'sick of ' this or that and i have personal favs - but physics shows us that whatever we focus on expands - so the more 'we' complain the more of the same we get - personally i want less of the bull not more -- so, just like the nightly news , which can be neither -- id like to suggest if i may -- a top 20 ' things Im grateful for "
heres a possible example -1- im so grateful that there is a 2 term limit for the presidency ref Geo W, 2 - im happy that people get blown up by suicide bombers , because it proves that ordinary people CAN be mind controlled , contrary to popular belief, 3 Im happy that Al Gore (el gordo) got his nobel prize for global warming , because its so easy to DISPROVE he will eventually be stripped of his award and debunked, 4 I am so happy that these political fools are doing foolish things because there are enuf smart people who know what needs to be done and wont be afraid to step up up and do the right thing when the time comes ,, etc etc ad nausuem how bout that?
